Basketball Arena (2012 Olympic)

The Basketball Arena for the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, United Kingdom will be located in the Olympic Park in Poplar, London..London's Olympic bid proposed that there would be four arenas in the Olympic Park, but the revised master plan published in 2006 reduced this to three, with the volleyball matches being moved to Earls Court Exhibition Centre. The fencing arena was also cancelled, and the fencing will now take place at Excel.
The Basketball Arena will have 12,000 seats for Olympic basketball and the semi-finals and finals of the Olympic handball, and 10,000 for Paralympics wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby. The arena will also be used as a holding area for athletes during the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the games. Concept designs were agreed in June 2008 and a planning application is due to be submitted in November 2008. It will be a temporary venue, and the largest built for any Games. And it is hoped that it will be reassembled elsewhere in the UK after the games.
In early October 2008 it was speculated that Wembley Arena could be used as a replacement venue for the preliminary rounds of the 2012 Olympic basketball tournament instead of the Basketball Arena, thus saving up to £90 million, but in March 2009 it was confirmed that a new arena will be built in Stratford as originally proposed. In late October 2009 it was announced that preparatory work had begun on the site and Glasgow-based Barr Construction would begin building the main arena in spring 2010. The basketball arena took 15 months to build and was completed in June 2011.

James A. Naismith was born at 6th November 1861.
He was a Canadian American sports coach and innovator.
He invented the sport of basketball in 1891.
He is often credited with introducing the first football helmet.
He wrote the original basketball rulebook, founded the University basketball program, and lived to see basketball adopted as an Olympic demonstration sport.
In 1904 and as an official event at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. James Naismith also lived to see the birth of the National Invitation Tournament (1938) and the birth of the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship (1939).
James Naismith was also a National Guard chaplain of the First Kansas Infantry Regiment. He taught his Soldiers basketball to control their excess energy. His effort helped increasing Soldiers' morale and even lowered the rate of disciplinary actions among Soldiers. In Lawrence, Kansas, James Naismith has a road named in his honor, Naismith Drive, which runs in front of Allen Field house (the official address of Allen Field house is 1651 Naismith Drive), the university's basketball facility.
He died at 28th November 1939.

Variations of basketball

Variations of basketball are activities based on the game of basketball, using common basketball skills and equipment. Some variations are only superficial rules changes, while others are distinct games with varying degrees of basketball influences. Other variations include children's games, contests or activities meant to help players reinforce skills.

There are principal basketball sports with variations on basketball including Wheelchair basketball, Water basketball, Beach basket ball slam ball, Street ball and Unicycle basketball. An earlier version of basketball was Six-on-six basketball played until the end of the 1950s.Horseball is a game played on horseback where a ball is handled and points are scored by shooting it through a high net (approximately 1.5m×1.5m). The sport is like a combination of polo, rugby, and basketball. There is even a form played on donkeys known as Donkey basketball, but that version has come under attack from animal rights groups.

Basket ball overview:

Basketball ("B-ball" or "hoops") is a sport in which two teams of five players try to score points by throwing “a ball through the top of a hoop while following a set of rules. Basketball is one of the world's most popular sports.
A regulation basketball hoop consists of a rim 18 inches in diameter and 10 feet high mounted to a backboard. A team can score a goal by throwing the ball through the hoop during regular play. A goal scores two points for the shooting team if a player is touching the hoop than the three-point line, and three points (a "3 pointer") if the player is "outside" the three-point line. The team having more points at the end of the game wins.
Basketball's early starting was from the United States. and it quickly reputed through the USA and Canada. By 1895, it was well known at several women's high schools.

Basketball Forever Great Unbreakable Records - History

Basketball Forever Great Record #5:

Kareem-Abdul Jabbar, born as Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor, Jr., played from 1969 through 1989.
This superb center scored 38,387 career points for the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers.
That is 1,459 more points than Karl Malone, who ranks second all-time. It is also 6,095 more points than Michael Jordan scored, who ranks third on the career leader board.
If those two greats couldn't come close to Jabbar, how is anyone else ever going to be able to?

Basketball Forever Great Record #4:

Utah Jazz guard John Stockton
had 15,806 assists in his career. All of them came for the Jazz, which meant that their fans had the pleasure of seeing this true team player's entire body of helpful work.
Jason Kidd, who was a member of the 2011 World Champion Dallas Mavericks team, ranks second with 4,228 less assists than the Gonzaga University graduate.

Basketball Forever Great Record #3:

Dr. J's hang time
Old school fans remember how Doctor J., Julius Erving, would take flight with the ball when he was around, or under, the net.
The total amount of combined hang time that he achieved during his career was totally ridiculous. Of course, that type of statistic doesn't appear on any stodgy chart.
This 'record' has been placed directly in the middle of the other records to lighten the mood, as overly serious individuals need a shot now and then to keep them on their game.

Basketball Forever Great Record #2:

Center Hakeem Olajuwon blocked 3,740 shots during his many years with the Houston Rockets. Then, he blocked another 90 shots during the final season of his career with the Toronto Raptors.
Combined, he blocked 3,830 shots from reaching the basket. That was 541 more than Dikembe Mutumbo.

Basketball Forever Great Record #1:

Bill Russell's career began with the Boston Celtics in 1956 and ended in 1969. The 11 championships that he won during those years are beyond remarkable.
In consideration of the structure of modern player contracts and the difficulty of one franchise winning multiple championships, the record that center set seems certain to never be eclipsed.

He led the Russian National Team to 4 gold medals in the European Championships, 2 gold medals in the World Championships, along with various silver and bronze medals in other years. US Americans often call him "the Jerry West of Russia" because of his on-court presence and comparable skills. Standing 6'3" tall, he was one of the largest figures in international basketball competitions for nearly 2 decades.

Semjonova, Uljana - Soviet Union/Latvia (born on September 3rd 1952)

In those 18 years, Semjonova never lost a single game of international competition! She won the European Cup Championships 10 times (1968, 1970, 1972, 1974, 1976, 1978, 1980, 1981, 1983, and 1985), the Champion of European Clubs' Cups over a dozen times (1968 to 1979, 1981 to 1983, and 1987), and the World Championships 3 times (1971, 1975, 1983).

Schmidt, Oscar - Brazil (born on 16th February 1958)

Great games include (Moscow 1980, Los Angeles 1984, Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996).

Only two Olympians have ever competed in five Olympic games and Oscar Schmidt is one of them. He was drafted by the New Jersey Nets in 1984, but the Nets could not convince him to join their team. He was the top scorer in three of those games, scoring a total of 1,093 points in the five Olympic games (he is the all-time scoring Olympian). He scored more points in his basketball career than any other player, totaling 48,161 (the second leading scorer is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with 38,387 points). Schmidt led the Brazilian National Team to an historic upset over the US National Team with David Robinson and Danny Manning in Indianapolis, 1987.

Great games include (Mexico 1968, Munich 1972, Montreal 1976, Moscow 1980).

Kresimir (also spelled Kresmir) Cosic often goes unrecognized in the world of international basketball, but his contributions to the game will never be forgotten. Cosic played at Brigham-Young University from 1970 to 1973, earning many collegiate awards and honors for leading his team to two regional championships. Cosic, like many international players, declined to play for NBA and ABA teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics. He returned to play for European clubs, leading his clubs to many prestigious championships. His four appearances in the Olympics earned him a silver medal in Mexico 1968, and a gold medal in Moscow 1980, when he lead the great Yugoslavian team to incredible victories over Italy and Yugoslavia.
