James A. Naismith was born at 6th November 1861.
He was a Canadian American sports coach and innovator.
He invented the sport of basketball in 1891.
He is often credited with introducing the first football helmet.
He wrote the original basketball rulebook, founded the University basketball program, and lived to see basketball adopted as an Olympic demonstration sport.
In 1904 and as an official event at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. James Naismith also lived to see the birth of the National Invitation Tournament (1938) and the birth of the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship (1939).
James Naismith was also a National Guard chaplain of the First Kansas Infantry Regiment. He taught his Soldiers basketball to control their excess energy. His effort helped increasing Soldiers' morale and even lowered the rate of disciplinary actions among Soldiers. In Lawrence, Kansas, James Naismith has a road named in his honor, Naismith Drive, which runs in front of Allen Field house (the official address of Allen Field house is 1651 Naismith Drive), the university's basketball facility.
He died at 28th November 1939.

Basketball at the 2012 Olympic Games is scheduled to be held from 28 July to 12 August. Competitions will be held at the newly built Basketball Arena, which will seat 12,000 spectators, and the O2 (called North Greenwich Arena because of the ban on commercialization in arena names during Olympic events) in London.
